Today, let’s dive into a topic that’s heavy but super important: the role of suffering in personal growth. We often think that wisdom should be enough to motivate ourselves. Yet, sometimes it takes a little suffering to wake us up. And while it’s tough to watch someone we care about struggle, sometimes, we need to let them be.
The Right Balance
When it comes to helping others, striking the right balance can feel like walking a tightrope. You want to be there for them. Yet, you don’t want to swoop in and save the day at the first sign of trouble. Consider this: if you always try to ease someone else’s pain, they miss out on valuable lessons. These lessons come from experiencing hardship.
Picture a chick trying to break free from its egg. If you help it out too early, guess what? It’s not going to make it. The struggle is a crucial part of its development. Similarly, when we step in too quickly to alleviate someone else’s struggle, we are causing more harm than good.
Gently Guide Them
So, what can we do? Well, we can speak up — gently guide them — but we need to keep our distance from their suffering. It’s tempting to feel their pain and want to fix things simply because we don’t want to see them hurt. But if we’re not careful, we end up getting sucked into their turmoil, and that won’t help anyone.
They must get out of their own mess. You have to stand by and let them suffer. If you ease them, it is an ego trip for you. Either that or you are somehow too identified with them and suffer what they suffer. Hence, you are moved to help them. Then you will have to suffer until it awakens you to what you are doing.
Real Growth Happens
Instead of jumping in to give comfort, maybe we can offer a little nudge in the right direction. Point out what they can’t see, but then step back. Let them feel what they need to feel. Sometimes, it’s in those tough moments that real growth happens.
So, the next time you see someone struggling, remember one thing. Allowing them to experience their own suffering can be a key part of their journey. Wisdom is great, but when that fails, suffering can just be the teacher they need. It can awaken something incredible in them. Keep being wise and decent, and let others learn their own way.
